God is light and God is love -- John's tests of real fellowship, real obedience, and real assurance
First John is a pastoral letter traditionally attributed to the apostle John, the beloved disciple, writing late in the first century to churches troubled by teachers who had gone out from them. It reads less like a formal epistle and more like a father's appeal -- John repeatedly addresses his readers as 'little children.' He opens exactly as an eyewitness: that which we have heard, seen with our eyes, and our hands have handled of the Word of life. Among the general epistles it is the longest of John's three letters and sets the vocabulary for the other two.
The letter circles through a few great tests. Doctrinally: whoever denies that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God -- that is the spirit of antichrist. Morally: he that saith he knows God and keeps not his commandments is a liar; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive. Relationally: he that loveth not his brother abideth in death, for God is love, and we love him because he first loved us. John contrasts light and darkness, love and hatred, the children of God and the world.
First John matters because it was written 'that ye may know that ye have eternal life' -- it is the New Testament's great letter of assurance. Real Christianity, John insists, shows itself in believing the truth about Jesus, walking in the light, and loving one another; perfect love casts out fear.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

How 1 John unfolds
6 sections- 1The Word of life and walking in the light (ch. 1)John writes as an eyewitness of the Word of life; God is light, and if we walk in the light and confess our sins, the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.
- 2Obedience, love, and the world (ch. 2:1-17)Christ is our advocate and propitiation; knowing him means keeping his commandments and loving our brother, and loving not the world, whose lust and pride pass away.
- 3Antichrists and abiding in the truth (ch. 2:18-29)Many antichrists have gone out, denying that Jesus is the Christ; the readers have an anointing from the Holy One and are urged to abide in him.
- 4Children of God and love in deed (ch. 3)Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed, that we should be called the sons of God; his children do not practice sin and love not in word only but in deed and in truth.
- 5Trying the spirits; God is love (ch. 4)Try the spirits: every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ come in the flesh is of God. God is love, he sent his Son as the propitiation for our sins, and perfect love casts out fear.
- 6Faith that overcomes and assurance of life (ch. 5)Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; faith is the victory that overcomes the world, and these things are written that believers may know they have eternal life.
