First Thessalonians is a letter from the apostle Paul, together with Silvanus (Silas) and Timotheus (Timothy), to the church at Thessalonica, the capital of Macedonia. Paul had founded the church on his second missionary journey (Acts 17) but was driven out by persecution after only a short stay. Written from Corinth around A.D. 50-51, it is one of the earliest books of the New Testament. When Timothy returned with good news of the Thessalonians' faith and love, Paul wrote this warm letter of thanksgiving and instruction.

The first half of the letter looks back: the gospel came to Thessalonica in power, the believers turned from idols to serve the living God, and their faith became an example to all Macedonia and Achaia. Paul defends the gentleness and integrity of his ministry among them, comparing himself to a nursing mother and an exhorting father. The second half looks forward, urging holiness and brotherly love, and answering an anxious question about believers who had died: the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, the dead in Christ shall rise first, and the living shall be caught up together with them.

First Thessalonians matters because it gives the church its clearest early teaching on the return of Christ, framing that hope not as speculation but as comfort. Its closing commands, rejoice evermore, pray without ceasing, in every thing give thanks, remain a pattern for daily Christian life.

How 1 Thessalonians unfolds

6 sections
  • 1
A model church (ch. 1)Paul thanks God for the Thessalonians' work of faith, labour of love, and patience of hope. They turned to God from idols and became examples to all believers, waiting for his Son from heaven.
  • 2
Paul's ministry remembered (ch. 2:1-16)Paul recalls his bold, gentle, and blameless conduct among them, working night and day so as not to be a burden, and thanks God that they received his message as the word of God.
  • 3
Timothy's mission and report (ch. 2:17-3:13)Hindered from returning himself, Paul sent Timothy to establish and comfort them. Timothy's good news of their faith brought Paul great comfort, and he prays to see them and perfect what is lacking.
  • 4
A walk of holiness and love (ch. 4:1-12)Paul calls the church to sanctification, abstaining from fornication, increasing in brotherly love, studying to be quiet, and working with their own hands.
  • 5
The coming of the Lord (ch. 4:13-18)Believers should not sorrow as those without hope: the Lord shall descend with a shout, the dead in Christ shall rise first, and the living shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air.
  • 6
The day of the Lord and final exhortations (ch. 5)That day comes as a thief in the night, so believers must watch and be sober. Paul closes with rapid commands: rejoice evermore, pray without ceasing, in every thing give thanks, quench not the Spirit, prove all things.
