First Timothy is a letter from the apostle Paul to Timothy, his own son in the faith, whom he had left in Ephesus to set the church in order. Written after Paul's first Roman imprisonment, likely in the early to mid 60s A.D., it is the first of the three Pastoral Epistles (with 2 Timothy and Titus), letters addressed not to congregations but to the men shepherding them. Timothy, young and naturally timid, faced false teachers giving heed to fables and endless genealogies and swerving into vain jangling.

The letter mixes doctrine and church order. Paul charges Timothy to war a good warfare against false teaching, recalling his own transformation from blasphemer and persecutor to pattern of mercy, for Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He gives instructions for prayer and worship, lists the qualifications of bishops and deacons, guides the care of widows and the honoring of elders, warns that the love of money is the root of all evil, and repeatedly presses Timothy to be an example of the believers and to keep that which is committed to his trust.

First Timothy matters because it shows what a healthy church looks like: the house of God, the pillar and ground of the truth. Its standards for leaders, its charge to guard sound doctrine, and its call to godliness with contentment have guided pastors and congregations ever since.

How 1 Timothy unfolds

6 sections
  • 1
Charge against false teachers (ch. 1)Paul left Timothy at Ephesus to charge some that they teach no other doctrine. He recalls the mercy shown to him, the chief of sinners, and commits to Timothy the charge to war a good warfare.
  • 2
Prayer and order in worship (ch. 2)Prayers are to be made for all men, including kings, for there is one God and one mediator, the man Christ Jesus. Paul gives instructions for men's prayer and women's modesty and learning.
  • 3
Qualifications for bishops and deacons (ch. 3)A bishop must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, apt to teach, and not covetous; deacons likewise must be grave and proved. The church is the house of God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
  • 4
A good minister against apostasy (ch. 4)The Spirit warns that some shall depart from the faith. Timothy must refuse profane fables, exercise himself unto godliness, let no man despise his youth, and give attendance to reading, exhortation, and doctrine.
  • 5
Widows, elders, and household duties (ch. 5:1-6:2)Instructions for honoring widows indeed, enrolling those over sixty, counting worthy elders who rule well as deserving double honour, receiving accusations carefully, and servants honoring their masters.
  • 6
Godliness, riches, and the final charge (ch. 6:3-21)Godliness with contentment is great gain, but the love of money is the root of all evil. Timothy, the man of God, must fight the good fight of faith, charge the rich to be rich in good works, and keep his trust.
