Elisha's miracles, a parade of kings, and the long slide of two kingdoms into exile
2 Kings completes the royal history begun in 1 Kings, tracing both Hebrew kingdoms from the days of Elijah and Elisha down to their destruction. Originally one book with 1 Kings, it is traditionally associated with the prophet Jeremiah and compiled from royal and prophetic records. It opens with Elijah taken up to heaven by a whirlwind in a chariot of fire, and Elisha receiving a double portion of his spirit to carry on a remarkable ministry of miracles.
Elisha heals Jericho's waters, multiplies a widow's oil, raises the Shunammite's son, and cleanses Naaman the Syrian of leprosy in the Jordan. Around these stories the two kingdoms stagger through revolts, idolatry, and reform: Jehu destroys the house of Ahab, but Israel never leaves Jeroboam's sin and falls to Assyria in 722 BC. Judah lasts longer, blessed with reformers like Hezekiah, whose prayer turns back Sennacherib, and Josiah, who restores the book of the law. Yet Manasseh's evil seals judgment, and Babylon destroys Jerusalem and the temple.
2 Kings matters because it explains the exile: not the weakness of Israel's God, but the persistent covenant-breaking of His people. Amid judgment, God keeps sending prophets, honoring repentance, and preserving David's line, leaving the door open for the hope the prophets promised beyond exile.
And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

How 2 Kings unfolds
7 sections- 1Elijah's departure, Elisha's mantle (ch. 1-2)Elijah calls down fire on Ahaziah's soldiers, then is carried to heaven by a whirlwind with a chariot of fire. Elisha takes his mantle and a double portion of his spirit.
- 2Elisha's miracles (ch. 3-8)Elisha multiplies a widow's oil, raises the Shunammite's son, heals Naaman's leprosy, makes an axe head float, and blinds a Syrian army, while famine and war press Israel.
- 3Jehu's purge (ch. 9-10)Anointed at Elisha's word, Jehu slays Joram, Ahaziah, and Jezebel, wipes out Ahab's house, and destroys Baal worship from Israel, yet keeps Jeroboam's golden calves.
- 4Joash and two kingdoms in decline (ch. 11-16)In Judah the boy king Joash survives Athaliah's massacre and repairs the temple. Kings good and evil follow in both lands as Assyria's shadow lengthens.
- 5The fall of Israel (ch. 17)Assyria captures Samaria and carries Israel away in 722 BC. The chapter's inspired commentary lays out why: they feared other gods and rejected the LORD's covenant and prophets.
- 6Hezekiah and Sennacherib (ch. 18-20)Faithful Hezekiah trusts the LORD against Assyria; Isaiah promises deliverance, and the angel of the LORD smites Sennacherib's host. Hezekiah's life is extended fifteen years.
- 7Manasseh, Josiah, and the fall of Judah (ch. 21-25)Manasseh's idolatry seals Judah's doom despite Josiah's great reform after the book of the law is found. Babylon takes Jerusalem, burns the temple, and carries Judah into exile.
