Ezra tells the story of the Jewish return from Babylonian exile, picking up exactly where 2 Chronicles ends, with the decree of Cyrus king of Persia. Jewish tradition names Ezra the scribe as its author, and the book was originally joined with Nehemiah as a single work. It sits at the head of the Bible's post-exilic history, showing how God kept his promise through Jeremiah that the captivity would end after seventy years and how a remnant returned to Jerusalem.

The book falls into two movements about sixty years apart. First, Zerubbabel leads some fifty thousand exiles home; they rebuild the altar, lay the temple foundation amid weeping and shouting, endure years of opposition that halts the work, and finish the house of God at the urging of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah. Second, Ezra the priest and scribe leads a smaller company back, carrying the king's blessing, and confronts the people's intermarriage with idolatrous neighbors, leading a painful national repentance.

Ezra matters because it shows God moving the hearts of pagan emperors to accomplish his word, and a community learning that restored walls and altars mean little without restored obedience. Ezra's own pattern, preparing his heart to seek, do, and teach God's law, remains a model for every generation.
