Galatians at a glance
Paul's fiery defense of the gospel of grace: justified by faith in Christ, not the works of the law
Galatians is the apostle Paul's letter to the churches of Galatia, congregations he had planted in what is now central Turkey. It is his most urgent and fiery epistle, written because false teachers, often called Judaizers, had followed behind him insisting that Gentile converts must be circumcised and keep the law of Moses to be saved. Paul skips his usual thanksgiving and goes straight to astonishment: I marvel that ye are so soon removed unto another gospel. For him, nothing less than the gospel itself was at stake.
Paul first defends his apostleship, received not from men but by revelation of Jesus Christ, recounting his conversion and even his public rebuke of Peter at Antioch for withdrawing from Gentile believers. Then he argues the case: Abraham believed God and it was counted for righteousness; the law was a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ; and in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free. The closing chapters turn to freedom rightly used, walking in the Spirit rather than the flesh, and the famous fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, and more.
Galatians matters because it guards the heart of Christianity: salvation is by grace through faith, plus nothing. Called the charter of Christian liberty, it fueled the Reformation and still frees believers from earning what Christ has already given.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

How Galatians unfolds
6 sections- 1No other gospel (ch. 1)Paul marvels that the Galatians are turning to a perverted gospel, and testifies that his message came by revelation of Jesus Christ, not from men.
- 2Paul's apostleship confirmed (ch. 2)The Jerusalem leaders add nothing to Paul's gospel; he rebukes Peter at Antioch, declaring that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Christ.
- 3Faith, Abraham, and the promise (ch. 3)The Galatians received the Spirit by faith, as Abraham was counted righteous by faith; the law was a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, in whom all are one.
- 4Sons, not slaves (ch. 4)God sent forth his Son to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons; Hagar and Sarah picture bondage and freedom.
- 5Standing fast in liberty (ch. 5)Stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free; walk in the Spirit, whose fruit is love, joy, peace, and not the works of the flesh.
- 6Sowing and reaping (ch. 6)Bear one another's burdens, be not weary in well doing, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap; Paul glories only in the cross.
