The shortest book of the Old Testament: one chapter of judgment on Edom for betraying its brother
Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, a single chapter of 21 verses attributed to the prophet Obadiah, whose name means 'servant of the LORD.' Nothing else is known about him personally. The book is a vision of judgment against Edom, the nation descended from Esau, the twin brother of Jacob. It sits among the Minor Prophets and most likely responds to Edom's conduct when Jerusalem fell to invaders, when the Edomites gloated over Judah's calamity and even helped cut off those who escaped.
The vision opens with Edom's pride: the nation dwelt in the clefts of the rock, its habitation high, boasting that no one could bring it down. God answers that though Edom set its nest among the stars, He would bring it down. The heart of the book is the charge of violence against 'thy brother Jacob' -- standing aloof on the day of Jerusalem's disaster, rejoicing over Judah's destruction, looting the city, and delivering up survivors. Because the day of the LORD is near upon all nations, Edom will reap exactly what it sowed.
Obadiah's message is that pride goes before a fall and that God defends His people even when their own kin betray them. The book ends in hope: upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, the house of Jacob will possess its possessions, and the kingdom shall be the LORD's. Judgment on Edom becomes a promise that God's rule will have the last word.
The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

How Obadiah unfolds
5 sections- 1Edom's pride and coming downfall (vv. 1-9)A vision announces that nations are summoned against Edom. Though Edom nests high in the clefts of the rock like an eagle, God will bring it down, and its hidden treasures will be searched out.
- 2The charge: violence against brother Jacob (vv. 10-11)Edom's crime is named: for violence against his brother Jacob, shame will cover Edom and it will be cut off forever. Edom stood on the other side while strangers carried away Jerusalem's wealth.
- 3Thou shouldest not have... (vv. 12-14)A sevenfold rebuke lists what Edom should not have done in the day of Judah's calamity: looked on, rejoiced, spoken proudly, entered the gate, laid hands on their substance, or cut off and delivered up those who escaped.
- 4The day of the LORD upon all nations (vv. 15-16)The day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as Edom has done, it shall be done to Edom, and its reward will return upon its own head.
- 5Deliverance on mount Zion (vv. 17-21)Upon mount Zion shall be deliverance and holiness. The house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Esau stubble; saviours will judge the mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the LORD's.
