Ruth is a short story of just four chapters, set 'in the days when the judges ruled' and traditionally attributed to the prophet Samuel. Against the dark backdrop of Judges, it shines as a quiet tale of ordinary faithfulness. A famine drives Elimelech and Naomi from Bethlehem to Moab, where Naomi loses her husband and both sons. She returns home empty, accompanied only by her Moabite daughter-in-law Ruth, whose pledge of loyalty is among the most beloved passages in Scripture.

Back in Bethlehem at the start of barley harvest, Ruth gleans in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy kinsman of Elimelech, who shows her striking kindness. At Naomi's direction Ruth appeals to Boaz at the threshing floor as a kinsman redeemer. Boaz honorably settles the claim of a nearer kinsman at the city gate, then marries Ruth. Their son Obed becomes the father of Jesse, the father of David, and the closing genealogy ties this village story to Israel's greatest king.

Ruth matters because it shows God's providence working through everyday loyalty and kindness rather than miracles. A foreign widow is welcomed into Israel and into the ancestry of David, and ultimately of the Messiah, showing that God's redeeming purposes reach beyond Israel's borders and often move through the humblest lives.
