Zechariah is the eleventh of the twelve Minor Prophets and the longest of them. Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, was both prophet and priest, and he began preaching in 520 BC, two months after Haggai, to the same community of exiles who had returned from Babylon to rebuild the temple under Zerubbabel and Joshua the high priest. Where Haggai's messages are short and practical, Zechariah's book is rich with symbolic visions and long-range prophecy, and it is quoted repeatedly in the New Testament accounts of Christ's final week.

The book opens with a call to return to the LORD, then unfolds a series of eight night visions - horsemen among the myrtle trees, four horns and four carpenters, a man with a measuring line, Joshua the high priest in filthy garments, a golden candlestick with two olive trees, a flying roll, a woman in an ephah, and four chariots. Joshua is crowned in a sign pointing to 'the man whose name is The BRANCH.' The later chapters look far ahead: a King coming to Zion lowly and riding upon an ass, thirty pieces of silver, a shepherd smitten and the sheep scattered, and the LORD standing upon the mount of Olives.

Zechariah matters because it ties the modest work of rebuilding a temple to God's vast plan of redemption. Its watchword - 'Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit' - reminds every generation that God's work is accomplished by God's Spirit, and its detailed portraits of the coming Messiah were fulfilled in Jesus with striking precision.

How Zechariah unfolds

7 sections
  • 1
A call to return to the LORD (ch. 1:1-6)Zechariah opens by urging the returned exiles not to be as their fathers, who ignored the former prophets: 'Turn ye unto me... and I will turn unto you.'
  • 2
The eight night visions (ch. 1:7-6:8)In one night Zechariah sees horsemen among the myrtles, four horns and carpenters, a measuring line, Joshua cleansed of filthy garments, a golden candlestick and two olive trees, a flying roll, a woman in an ephah, and four chariots - visions of God's care for Jerusalem and judgment on her foes.
  • 3
The crowning of Joshua (ch. 6:9-15)Crowns are set on the head of Joshua the high priest as a sign of 'the man whose name is The BRANCH,' who shall build the temple of the LORD and be a priest upon his throne.
  • 4
Fasting questioned, blessing promised (ch. 7-8)Asked whether the exile fasts should continue, God calls instead for truth, mercy, and justice, and promises a restored Jerusalem where old men and boys and girls fill the streets and the fasts become cheerful feasts.
  • 5
The coming King (ch. 9-11)Judgment falls on surrounding nations, but Zion's King comes lowly and riding upon an ass. The shepherd chapters follow, including the thirty pieces of silver cast unto the potter in the house of the LORD.
  • 6
Jerusalem's deliverance and the pierced one (ch. 12-13)God promises to defend Jerusalem, pour out the spirit of grace, and 'they shall look upon me whom they have pierced.' A fountain is opened for sin, the shepherd is smitten, and a refined third part becomes God's people.
  • 7
The LORD shall be king over all the earth (ch. 14)His feet stand upon the mount of Olives, living waters go out from Jerusalem, and the nations come up to keep the feast of tabernacles; even the bells of the horses read HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD.
