1 Peter is a letter from the apostle Peter to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, regions of Asia Minor where believers were facing hostility for their faith. Peter writes from Babylon, widely understood as a code name for Rome, with Silvanus as his scribe and Marcus at his side. The fisherman whom Jesus restored now shepherds a scattered flock, addressing Christians as elect sojourners, people whose true citizenship lies elsewhere while they endure fiery trials where they live.

The letter opens with a doxology to the God who has begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, an inheritance incorruptible reserved in heaven. Peter calls his readers a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, redeemed not with silver and gold but with the precious blood of Christ. He gives instructions for living honestly among the Gentiles, submitting to rulers and masters, and for husbands and wives, all patterned on Christ, who suffered for us, leaving an example. Believers must be ready always to give an answer for their hope, cast all their care on God, and resist the devil, who walks about as a roaring lion.

1 Peter matters because it teaches the church how to suffer well: not surprised by the fiery trial, but rejoicing as partakers of Christ's sufferings. Its promise stands for every generation of pressured believers: after ye have suffered a while, the God of all grace will make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

How 1 Peter unfolds

7 sections
  • 1
A lively hope through the resurrection (ch. 1:1-12)Peter blesses God for begetting believers again to a lively hope and an incorruptible inheritance; their tried faith is more precious than gold, a salvation prophets searched into and angels desire to look into.
  • 2
Be holy; redeemed by precious blood (ch. 1:13-25)As obedient children, be holy as he is holy, knowing you were redeemed not with silver and gold but with the precious blood of Christ, born again by the word of God which liveth and abideth for ever.
  • 3
A chosen generation, a royal priesthood (ch. 2:1-12)Coming to Christ the living stone, disallowed of men but chosen of God, believers are built into a spiritual house, a chosen generation called out of darkness into his marvellous light.
  • 4
Submission and Christ's example (ch. 2:13-25)Submit to every ordinance of man, and servants to masters even the froward, for Christ suffered for us, leaving an example: who did no sin, and by whose stripes ye were healed.
  • 5
Husbands, wives, and suffering for righteousness (ch. 3)Wives win husbands by chaste conversation and a meek and quiet spirit, husbands honor wives as heirs together of grace; be ready always to give an answer for your hope, for Christ once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust.
  • 6
Arm yourselves; the fiery trial (ch. 4)Arm yourselves with Christ's mind, for the end of all things is at hand; think it not strange concerning the fiery trial, but rejoice as partakers of Christ's sufferings, and let none suffer as an evildoer but as a Christian.
  • 7
Shepherds, humility, and the roaring lion (ch. 5)Elders must feed the flock willingly as ensamples, awaiting the chief Shepherd; all should be clothed with humility, casting care upon God, and resist the devil, a roaring lion, for the God of all grace will stablish and settle you.
