James is a letter of intensely practical wisdom written to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, Jewish believers dispersed across the ancient world. Its author is traditionally James, the brother of the Lord and leader of the Jerusalem church, who calls himself simply a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Often counted among the earliest New Testament writings, it reads like a Christian book of Proverbs, echoing the Sermon on the Mount in almost every paragraph and firing off dozens of direct commands in just five chapters.

James opens by telling believers to count it all joy when they fall into divers temptations, and to ask God for wisdom, who gives to all men liberally. From there he sweeps through hearing and doing the word, the sin of favoring the rich man with the gold ring, the famous declaration that faith without works is dead, the untamable tongue that is a fire, a world of iniquity, quarrels born of worldly lusts, the arrogance of boasting about tomorrow, warnings to rich oppressors, and the prayer of faith that saves the sick, with Elias as proof that the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

James matters because it refuses to let faith stay theoretical. Pure religion, he says, is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only: that single command is the whole letter in miniature.

How James unfolds

7 sections
  • 1
Trials, wisdom, and enduring temptation (ch. 1:1-18)Count it all joy in divers temptations, for trying of faith works patience; those lacking wisdom should ask God, and blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for every good gift is from above.
  • 2
Doers of the word, not hearers only (ch. 1:19-27)Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; the hearer who does not act is like a man beholding his face in a glass, while pure religion visits the fatherless and widows and keeps unspotted from the world.
  • 3
Respect of persons and the royal law (ch. 2:1-13)Favoring the man with the gold ring over the poor man violates the royal law, love thy neighbour as thyself; mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
  • 4
Faith without works is dead (ch. 2:14-26)Faith that gives a needy brother only words is dead, being alone; Abraham offering Isaac and Rahab receiving the messengers show that by works faith is made perfect.
  • 5
The tongue and true wisdom (ch. 3)The tongue is a little member that boasts great things, a fire no man can tame, blessing God and cursing men; wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy.
  • 6
Submit to God; boast not of tomorrow (ch. 4)Wars come from lusts within; God resisteth the proud but giveth grace to the humble, so submit to God, resist the devil, and say If the Lord will, for life is a vapour.
  • 7
Riches, patience, and the prayer of faith (ch. 5)Rich oppressors should weep for miseries to come; brethren must be patient unto the coming of the Lord like Job, and the prayer of faith heals the sick, as Elias's fervent prayer shut and opened heaven.
