Hebrews is an anonymous New Testament letter, or more precisely a written sermon, addressed to Jewish Christians who were tempted under pressure to drift back toward the old covenant system. Its author is unnamed; tradition has long associated it with Paul, while others have suggested Barnabas, Apollos, or Luke, and the early church admitted the question was known only to God. Whoever wrote it produced some of the most polished Greek and richest Old Testament exposition in the New Testament, arguing from the Law, the Psalms, and the Prophets that everything old was a shadow pointing to Christ.

The argument builds relentlessly: the Son is better than angels, greater than Moses, and a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec, offering a better covenant, a better sanctuary, and a better sacrifice, once for all. Its famous passages include the living and powerful word sharper than any twoedged sword, the warning not to harden your hearts, the roll call of faith in chapter 11 from Abel to Rahab, and the call to run with patience the race set before us, looking unto Jesus. Five solemn warnings against drifting, unbelief, and willful sin punctuate the letter.

Hebrews matters because it explains how the Old and New Testaments fit together: sacrifice, priesthood, and tabernacle all find their substance in Jesus. Its pastoral aim is endurance, holding fast the profession of faith because he who promised is faithful, and Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Verse to remember

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

How Hebrews unfolds

8 sections
  • 1
The Son, better than angels (ch. 1-2)God, who spoke through the prophets, has spoken by his Son, the brightness of his glory, exalted above angels; yet he was made a little lower than the angels to taste death for every man and become a merciful high priest.
  • 2
Greater than Moses; the rest of God (ch. 3-4)Jesus is counted worthy of more glory than Moses, and the wilderness generation warns against hardened unbelief; a rest remains for the people of God, and the word of God is quick and powerful.
  • 3
A high priest after the order of Melchisedec (ch. 5-7)Christ, called of God as was Aaron, is a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec, the king of Salem who blessed Abraham; his unchangeable priesthood means he is able to save to the uttermost.
  • 4
A better covenant and sanctuary (ch. 8-9)Christ ministers in the true tabernacle as mediator of a new covenant promised through Jeremiah, entering the holy place not with the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.
  • 5
One sacrifice for sins for ever (ch. 10)The law's repeated sacrifices could never take away sins, but Christ offered one sacrifice for ever; believers may enter boldly by the blood of Jesus, holding fast their profession and not forsaking assembling together.
  • 6
The hall of faith (ch. 11)Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and by it the elders obtained a good report: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, and many more who died in faith, not having received the promises.
  • 7
Run the race; the discipline of sons (ch. 12)Compassed about with a cloud of witnesses, believers run with patience, looking unto Jesus; the Lord chastens whom he loves, and we receive a kingdom which cannot be moved.
  • 8
Closing exhortations and benediction (ch. 13)Let brotherly love continue: hospitality, purity, contentment, and obedience to leaders; Jesus suffered without the gate, and the God of peace, who raised the great shepherd of the sheep, makes his people perfect in every good work.
