Hosea at a glance
A prophet marries an unfaithful wife to show a heartbroken God who still loves wayward Israel
Hosea, son of Beeri, prophesied to the northern kingdom of Israel in the eighth century BC, during the prosperous but corrupt final decades before Assyria destroyed Samaria in 722 BC. He is the first of the twelve Minor Prophets, and his book is unique in Scripture: God commands the prophet to marry Gomer, a wife of whoredoms, so that his own broken marriage becomes a living picture of God's covenant with an unfaithful people.
The opening chapters tell the story: Hosea and Gomer's children are given sign-names, Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah (not having obtained mercy), and Lo-ammi (not my people), and when Gomer leaves, Hosea buys her back for fifteen pieces of silver and a measure of barley. The rest of the book turns that drama into preaching: Israel has played the harlot with Baal, priests and kings have fed on sin, and the people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Judgment is coming, yet God's heart recoils: how shall I give thee up, Ephraim?
Hosea reveals the wounded love of God more intimately than almost any other prophet. He desires mercy and not sacrifice, a line Jesus quotes twice, and his closing promise, I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, holds out restoration beyond judgment. The book calls God's people in every age back from empty religion to covenant faithfulness and the knowledge of the LORD.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

How Hosea unfolds
6 sections- 1Hosea's marriage as a sign (ch. 1-3)Hosea marries Gomer, their children receive judgment names, and the prophet redeems his unfaithful wife, a picture of God's persistent love for Israel.
- 2The LORD's controversy with Israel (ch. 4-6)God indicts the land for swearing, lying, killing, and stealing; the people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, and God desires mercy, not sacrifice.
- 3Israel's rot within and without (ch. 7-8)Ephraim is a cake not turned and a silly dove, mixing with the nations and trusting alliances; they have sown the wind, and shall reap the whirlwind.
- 4Judgment announced (ch. 9-10)The days of visitation are come: exile to Assyria, barren worship at Bethel's calves, and the call to break up fallow ground and seek the LORD.
- 5The Father's anguished love (ch. 11-13)God remembers calling his son out of Egypt and teaching Ephraim to walk; his compassions are kindled even as Samaria's rebellion ripens into ruin.
- 6Return and healing (ch. 14)A closing invitation: O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; he will heal their backsliding, love them freely, and make them blossom like the lily.
