Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, traditionally attributed to Moses, and it carries Israel from Mount Sinai to the very border of the promised land. Its English name comes from the two censuses that frame the book - one numbering the generation that left Egypt, one numbering their children forty years later. Its Hebrew name, 'In the Wilderness,' better captures the story: an eleven-day journey that becomes a forty-year funeral march because of unbelief, even as God's presence, provision, and promises never fail.

The book opens with Israel organized around the tabernacle and marching out under the cloud of God's presence. Then comes the tragedy at Kadesh: ten of the twelve spies bring back an evil report of the land, the people refuse to enter, and God sentences that whole generation to die in the wilderness - only Joshua and Caleb will go in. The years that follow bring Korah's rebellion, the budding of Aaron's rod, water from the rock (and Moses' own failure there), the brass serpent, and the strange episode of Balaam, the prophet hired to curse Israel who can only bless.

Numbers matters as the Bible's great warning about unbelief - a redeemed people can still forfeit blessing through grumbling and fear - and its great comfort: God keeps covenant with the next generation anyway. The priestly blessing of chapter 6 and the brass serpent, which Jesus applied to himself, are among its most enduring gifts.

How Numbers unfolds

7 sections
  • 1
Numbered and ordered at Sinai (ch. 1-10)The first census counts the fighting men, the camp is arranged around the tabernacle, the Levites are set apart, and Israel marches out from Sinai under the cloud.
  • 2
Complaints on the road (ch. 11-12)The people grumble about the manna and crave meat, and even Miriam and Aaron speak against Moses, whom God defends as his uniquely trusted servant.
  • 3
The spies and the great rebellion (ch. 13-14)Twelve spies scout Canaan; ten spread fear and the people refuse to enter, so God decrees forty years of wandering until that generation dies - only Caleb and Joshua will enter.
  • 4
Rebellion and vindication (ch. 15-19)Korah, Dathan, and Abiram rise against Moses and Aaron and are swallowed by the earth, and Aaron's rod buds with almonds to confirm God's chosen priesthood.
  • 5
Failures and the brass serpent (ch. 20-21)Miriam and Aaron die, Moses strikes the rock instead of speaking to it and is barred from the land, and when fiery serpents bite the people, all who look at the brass serpent live.
  • 6
Balaam's blessings (ch. 22-25)Balak of Moab hires the prophet Balaam to curse Israel, but after his donkey speaks, Balaam can pronounce only blessing - though Israel then falls into sin with Moab at Peor.
  • 7
A new generation prepared (ch. 26-36)A second census counts the new generation, Joshua is commissioned to succeed Moses, and laws on offerings, vows, cities of refuge, and tribal inheritance ready Israel to enter the land.
