Bible verses

Bible verses about angels

The Bible describes angels as "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation" (Hebrews 1:14). Psalm 91:11 says God "shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways," and angels in Scripture worship God, carry his messages, and protect his people.

Angels appear from Genesis to Revelation. They climb a ladder in Jacob's dream, announce the births of John and Jesus, roll away the stone from the tomb, and open prison doors. The word angel is usually explained as meaning messenger, and that is much of what they do.

This page gathers verses about angels in general. For the angels the Bible names (Gabriel, Michael) and what the Bible says angels look like, see the angels in the Bible list.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about angels?

It says angels are created spirits who serve God, praise him, carry his messages, and help his people (Hebrews 1:14, Psalm 103:20). They are not to be worshipped (Revelation 22:8-9).

Do we have guardian angels according to the Bible?

Psalm 91:11 and Psalm 34:7 say God's angels guard those who fear him, and Jesus spoke of little ones whose angels behold the Father's face (Matthew 18:10). Whether each person has one assigned angel is something the Bible does not spell out, and Christians differ on it.

Do people become angels when they die?

The Bible does not say so. Angels and people are described as different kinds of beings: man was made "a little lower than the angels" (Psalm 8:5), and Jesus said the resurrected will be as the angels in one way, not marrying (Matthew 22:30).

How many angels are there in the Bible?

Scripture does not give a count. Revelation 5:11 speaks of "ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands," and Hebrews 12:22 calls them "an innumerable company of angels."

What do angels look like in the Bible?

Descriptions vary, from men who could be mistaken for strangers (Hebrews 13:2) to dazzling figures that terrified those who saw them. The angels in the Bible list covers the named angels and their descriptions in detail.
