The story

David and Goliath

A shepherd boy, a giant, and five smooth stones -- and a battle that belonged to the LORD.

For forty days the Philistine champion Goliath of Gath, a giant armored in brass and iron, taunts the armies of Israel across the valley of Elah, and no soldier dares to answer him. Then a young shepherd named David arrives from Bethlehem carrying bread to his brothers. Hearing the giant's defiance, he asks the question no one else will: who is this Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? He tells King Saul how the LORD delivered him from the lion and the bear that came against his father's sheep.

David refuses Saul's armor, for he has not proved it, and instead chooses five smooth stones from the brook. The giant despises the boy who comes against him with a staff and a sling, but David answers that he comes in the name of the LORD of hosts, for the battle is the LORD's. One stone sinks into the giant's forehead, and Goliath falls to the earth. The Philistines flee, and all Israel learns that the LORD saves not with sword and spear.

Courage does not come from size or armor but from trusting God. When we face giants of our own, the battle belongs to the LORD.
Verse to remember

And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.
