- 1 David and Goliath 1 Samuel 17 · 12 questions · 6 parts “And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.” 1 Samuel 17:47 The armies of the Philistines and Israel were encamped on opposing mountains, separated by the valley of Elah, with the Philistines pitched between Shochoh and Azekah in Ephesdammim. From the Philistine camp came a champion, Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
- 2 Noah's Ark Genesis 6-9 · 12 questions · 6 parts “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.” Genesis 9:13 The narrative opens with a sobering assessment of humanity: God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The earth was corrupt before God and filled with violence.
- 3 Adam and Eve Genesis 2-3 · 12 questions · 6 parts “And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?” Genesis 3:9 Genesis 2 narrows from the cosmic scope of chapter 1 to a single man and a single garden. The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
- 4 Moses and the Red Sea Exodus 14 · 12 questions · 6 parts “And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.” Exodus 14:31 The crisis of Exodus 14 begins after the deliverance, not before it. When the king of Egypt is told that the people fled, the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants is turned against the people, and their complaint is entirely about lost labour: Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us? He makes ready his chariot and takes six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.
- 5 Creation Genesis 1 · 12 questions · 6 parts “And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” Genesis 2:3 The opening sentence of Scripture makes a claim about ownership before it makes one about mechanism: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. No origin for God is offered and none is argued for.
- 6 Daniel in the Lions' Den Daniel 6 · 12 questions · 6 parts “for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.” Daniel 6:26 The chapter opens with administration rather than drama. It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, and over these three presidents, of whom Daniel was first, so that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.
- 7 Jonah and the Whale Jonah 1-2 · 12 questions · 6 parts “But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” Jonah 2:9 The commission is unambiguous and the refusal is immediate. Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
- 8 The Prodigal Son Luke 15:11-32 · 12 questions · 6 parts “It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.” Luke 15:32 The parable is the third in a sequence about lost things, and it is the only one with two lost sons. And he said, A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me.
- 9 The Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37 · 12 questions · 6 parts “Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.” Luke 10:36-37 The setting is an examination, not a pastoral conversation. And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? A scholar of the law is testing a teacher in public.
- 10 Elijah on Mount Carmel 1 Kings 18 · 12 questions · 6 parts “Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.” 1 Kings 18:37 The scene begins with the assignment of blame. And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? The king identifies the messenger who announced the drought as its cause.
