“The LORD, he is the God”

1 Kings 18:39 (KJV)

The story

King Ahab had led Israel to worship Baal instead of the LORD. When Ahab saw Elijah, he said, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? Elijah answered that he had not troubled Israel, but Ahab and his father's house had, because they had forsaken the commandments of the LORD. Elijah told Ahab to gather all Israel to mount Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal. 1 Kings 18:17-20

Elijah asked the people, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. So Elijah gave them a test. Each side would prepare a bullock on wood and put no fire under it. Then each would call on their god, and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. The prophets of Baal went first. They called on Baal from morning until noon, but there was no voice, nor any that answered. 1 Kings 18:21-26

Then Elijah repaired the altar of the LORD with twelve stones. He dug a trench around it, laid the wood and the bullock on it, and told the people to pour four barrels of water over the sacrifice three times, until the water filled the trench. Then Elijah prayed. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God. 1 Kings 18:30-39
