The story

A certain lawyer stood up and asked Jesus a question to test him. He said, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus asked him what was written in the law. The man answered that we must love the Lord our God with all our heart, and with all our soul, and with all our strength, and with all our mind, and love our neighbour as ourselves. Jesus told him he had answered right. But the man asked another question: And who is my neighbour? So Jesus told him a story. Luke 10:25-29

A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves. They took his clothes, wounded him, and went away, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest came down that way. When he saw the hurt man, he passed by on the other side. Then a Levite came to the place, looked at him, and he passed by on the other side too. Two men saw the trouble, and two men kept walking. Luke 10:30-32

But a certain Samaritan came where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion on him. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine. He set the man on his own beast, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two pence and gave them to the host and said, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Then Jesus asked which of the three was a neighbour to the hurt man. The lawyer said, He that shewed mercy on him. Jesus said, Go, and do thou likewise. Luke 10:33-37
