Bible verses about forgiveness

The Bible teaches that God forgives sin freely when people confess and turn to him, and that those who are forgiven should forgive others. 1 John 1:9 says that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us, and Ephesians 4:32 says to forgive one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Forgiveness runs in two directions in Scripture. First God forgives us, and the Bible uses vivid pictures for it: sins removed as far as the east is from the west, washed white as snow, thrown into the depths of the sea. Then, because we have been forgiven, we are told to forgive others.

These verses are grouped to follow that order: God's readiness to forgive, how confession works, the command to forgive others, how often, and real stories of people who forgave.
