Bible verses about salvation
The Bible teaches that all people have sinned and that God, out of love, sent Jesus to save them. John 3:16 says that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life, and Ephesians 2:8 says, For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.
Salvation in the Bible means being rescued: from sin, from its penalty, and into a restored relationship with God. The Old Testament already sings that salvation is of the LORD, and the New Testament names Jesus as the one through whom it comes.
The verses below follow the Bible's own order: the problem of sin, God's love that acts first, the call to believe and turn to God, the new life that follows, and the hope it gives. Christian traditions differ on some details, such as the role of baptism and the sacraments, and this page does not take sides on those questions.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Common questions
What does the Bible say about salvation?
It says all have sinned, that God sent Jesus out of love to save, and that salvation is received by grace through faith. John 3:16, Romans 3:23-24, and Ephesians 2:8-9 summarize it.
What must I do to be saved?
A jailer asked Paul and Silas this exact question in Acts 16:30. They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved." Romans 10:9 adds confessing Jesus as Lord and believing God raised him from the dead.
Is salvation by faith or by works?
Ephesians 2:8-9 says salvation is by grace through faith, not of works. James 2 adds that real faith shows itself in what a person does. Christian traditions explain how these fit together in different ways, and a local pastor can walk you through it.
Can you know you are saved?
1 John 5:13 says it was written "that ye may know that ye have eternal life." Christians agree the Bible offers assurance, though traditions describe it in different ways.
What is the Romans Road to salvation?
It is a popular way of explaining salvation using verses from Romans in order, usually Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5:8, and 10:9-10, sometimes with 10:13. It is a teaching tool, not a passage in the Bible itself.
