The story

King Darius chose a hundred and twenty princes to rule his kingdom, and over them he set three presidents. Daniel was the first of the three. Daniel did such good work that the king planned to put him over the whole realm. This made the other leaders jealous. They tried to find something wrong with Daniel, but they could not find any fault at all, because he was faithful. So they said the only way to trap him was through the law of his God. Daniel 6:1-5

They went to the king and asked him to sign a new law: for thirty days, no one could pray to any God or man except the king. Anyone who did would be thrown into the den of lions. King Darius signed it. When Daniel knew the writing was signed, he went into his house, opened his windows toward Jerusalem, and kneeled upon his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks to God, just as he had always done. The men were watching, and they found him praying. Daniel 6:6-11

They told the king, and the king was very sorry, but the law could not be changed. So Daniel was cast into the den of lions, and a stone was laid on the mouth of the den. The king went home and would not eat, and he could not sleep. Very early in the morning he ran to the den and called out. Daniel answered, My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths. The king was exceeding glad, and Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. Daniel 6:12-23
