Bible verses about courage

The Bible's best-known courage verse is Joshua 1:9: "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." In Scripture, courage almost always rests on the same reason: God is with you.

The phrase be strong and of a good courage (or close to it) shows up again and again in the Old Testament, usually spoken to someone facing a job too big for them: Joshua taking the land, Solomon building the temple, Ezra leading Israel to repent.

The verses below collect those commands, the promises behind them, the stories of people who acted bravely, and the New Testament's word for courage in speaking: boldness.
