Ephesians 6
Ephesians 6 gives instructions to children and fathers and to servants and masters, then calls believers to be strong in the Lord and put on the whole armour of God. It names six pieces of armour, from the belt of truth to the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, and urges constant prayer.
Ephesians 6 (KJV)
Children and fathers v. 1-4
1Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
3That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Servants and masters v. 5-9
5Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
6Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
7With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
8Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
9And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.
Be strong in the Lord v. 10-13
10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
The whole armour of God v. 14-17
14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Praying always v. 18-20
18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
19And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
20For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Tychicus and closing blessing v. 21-24
21But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:
22Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.
23Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
24Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.
What Ephesians 6 means
Ephesians 6 finishes a section on households that began in chapter 5. Children are told to obey their parents in the Lord, and Paul notes that honoring father and mother is "the first commandment with promise" (verse 2). Fathers in turn are told not to provoke their children to wrath but to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Verses 5-9 speak to servants and masters. Servants are to work sincerely, as if serving Christ, not just when someone is watching. Masters are to treat their servants the same way and stop threatening them, remembering that they also have a Master in heaven who shows no favoritism.
From verse 10 Paul turns to the struggle every believer faces. "Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might." The real fight is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual powers of darkness. So believers are to take up the whole armour of God, so that after doing everything they can, they are still standing.
The armour is described piece by piece: loins girt about with truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith that quenches the fiery darts of the wicked, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Most of the pieces are for defense; the sword is the one named weapon.
Prayer runs straight on from the armour. Paul asks the Ephesians to pray always for all saints, and also for him, that he would speak the gospel boldly. He calls himself "an ambassador in bonds" because he was writing as a prisoner. He sends Tychicus to tell them his news and closes with peace, love, faith and grace.
Background and context
Paul names himself as the writer in Ephesians 1:1. He wrote as a prisoner (Ephesians 3:1, 6:20), and the letter is traditionally dated to his imprisonment in Rome in the early 60s AD.
Ephesus was a major city in the Roman province of Asia, and readers there would likely have known a soldier's gear by sight. Paul's armour picture also draws on Isaiah, where God himself puts on righteousness as a breastplate and a helmet of salvation (Isaiah 59:17).
