Bible verses about prayer
The Bible teaches that prayer is talking honestly with God, who hears and answers. Jesus taught his followers to pray in Matthew 6:9-13, beginning Our Father which art in heaven, and Paul wrote, Pray without ceasing. Scripture invites people to bring every need, give thanks, confess sin, and pray for others.
Prayer runs through the whole Bible, from Hannah asking for a son to Jesus praying all night on a mountain. It is never presented as a formula that forces God's hand. It is presented as access: children speaking to a Father who already knows what they need.
The verses below are grouped by how Jesus taught prayer, God's promises to hear, the call to keep praying, praying for others, and the example of people who prayed.
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Common questions
What does the Bible say about prayer?
It says God hears those who call on him, invites people to pray about everything, and urges them to keep praying. Matthew 6:9-13, Philippians 4:6-7 and 1 Thessalonians 5:17 are key passages.
What is the Lord's Prayer in the KJV?
It is in Matthew 6:9-13, beginning "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." A shorter form is in Luke 11:2-4. The closing words about the kingdom, power and glory appear in the KJV of Matthew but are missing from some ancient manuscripts, so some modern Bibles leave them out.
Does God answer every prayer?
The Bible says God hears his people, and 1 John 5:14 ties answered prayer to asking according to his will. Jesus himself asked for the cup to pass and then prayed, not my will, but thine. Christians often say God answers yes, no or wait.
What is the shortest prayer in the Bible?
Peter's cry while sinking in the water, "Lord, save me" in Matthew 14:30, is often named, along with the thief on the cross asking Jesus to remember him in Luke 23:42.
