Bible verses about trusting God

The Bible's best-known verse on trusting God is Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Scripture calls people to rely on God rather than on their own wisdom, wealth or powerful people, and promises that those who trust him will not be put to shame.

In the Bible, trust is something you do, not only something you feel. People trust God by committing their plans to him, obeying when they cannot see the outcome, and turning to him first when they are afraid.

These verses are grouped by what trust looks like in practice: with all your heart, when you are afraid, instead of other things, when you cannot see the way, and in the lives of people who trusted God with everything.

Common questions

What is the main Bible verse about trusting God?

Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

How do you trust God when you are afraid?

The psalms model it as a decision: "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." Many people pray that verse, tell God plainly what they fear, and then take the next right step.

What does it mean to lean not on your own understanding?

It means not making your own reasoning the final word. Proverbs 3:5-6 does not tell people to stop thinking, but to bring their plans to God and let him direct them.

Who in the Bible trusted God the most?

Abraham is the classic example: he left home not knowing where he was going and believed God would provide. Daniel, his three friends, Job and King Hezekiah are also remembered for their trust.
