Elijah

In the days of wicked king Ahab, when Israel had turned to worship Baal, the prophet Elijah stands before the throne and declares that there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, but according to his word. As the drought grips the land, God hides Elijah by the brook Cherith, where ravens bring him bread and flesh morning and evening. When the brook dries up, he is sent to a poor widow of Zarephath with nothing but a handful of meal and a little oil -- yet at his word the barrel of meal wastes not, neither does the cruse of oil fail, and when her son falls sick and dies, Elijah stretches himself upon the child and cries to the LORD, and the boy revives.

In the third year the LORD sends Elijah back to Ahab, and on Mount Carmel he gathers all Israel and the prophets of Baal. How long halt ye between two opinions? he cries. The God that answereth by fire, let him be God. From morning to noon the prophets of Baal call in vain; no voice answers. Then Elijah repairs the altar of the LORD with twelve stones, drenches the sacrifice with water three times, and prays -- and the fire of the LORD falls and consumes the offering, the wood, the stones, and the water. The people fall on their faces crying, The LORD, he is the God. Then Elijah prays, a little cloud like a man's hand rises from the sea, the heavens grow black, and a great rain ends the drought.
