Bible verses about friendship

The Bible's best-known verses on friendship are Proverbs 17:17, "A friend loveth at all times," Proverbs 18:24, "there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother," and John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Proverbs 27:17 adds, "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."

Much of what the Bible says about friendship is in Proverbs, which has a lot to say about loyal friends, honest friends and the wrong kind of company. The historical books add real friendships, above all David and Jonathan.

The New Testament takes friendship further. Jesus calls his disciples friends, and James says Abraham "was called the Friend of God." These KJV verses are grouped into five themes.
