Bible verses

Funeral Bible verses

The scriptures most often read at a funeral are Psalm 23, John 14:1-3 ("In my Father's house are many mansions"), John 11:25-26, Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, Romans 8:38-39 and Revelation 21:4. For an obituary or program, families often choose 2 Timothy 4:7 or Revelation 14:13.

A funeral usually has one to three Scripture readings, read by a minister, family member or friend. The first group below lists the passages most often chosen for a reading at the service. The others are shorter verses for the printed program, the obituary or a headstone, and verses of comfort to write in a sympathy card.

If you are planning a service, ask the minister or family which readings they would like; many churches have their own customary passages. Every verse below is the King James Version text.

Readings for the funeral service

Each of these is suitable for a reading at the service.

  1. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

    Psalm 23

  2. Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Jesus to Martha after her brother Lazarus had lain in the grave four days: I am the resurrection, and the life. Often read as the service begins.

  4. To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
