Bible verses about grief
The Bible treats grief as real and worth weeping over, and it promises that God is near to people in it. Psalm 34:18 says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Jesus himself wept over Lazarus, and Revelation 21:4 looks ahead to the day God shall wipe away all tears.
Grief does not follow a schedule, and the Bible does not rush it. Its pages are full of people who mourned for days, cried all night, and asked God how long. Their words are here so that ours can join them.
These verses are grouped by what a grieving heart often needs: to know God is close, to see that Jesus grieved too, words for honest sorrow, the example of others who mourned, and the hope that sorrow is not the end.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Common questions
What does the Bible say about grief?
It treats grief as real and normal, and it promises God's nearness to the brokenhearted. It also gives hope: Christians grieve, but 1 Thessalonians 4:13 says not as others which have no hope.
Is it wrong for a Christian to grieve?
No. Jesus wept over his friend Lazarus, Joseph wept over his father, and Israel mourned Moses for thirty days. Grieving is not a lack of faith.
What is a comforting Bible verse for someone who lost a loved one?
Many people turn to Psalm 34:18, John 14:2-3, Revelation 21:4, or 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14. For a card or note, a short verse such as "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted" is often best.
How long does grief last, according to the Bible?
The Bible gives no timetable. Israel set aside thirty days for Moses, Jacob mourned Joseph many days, and Ecclesiastes simply says there is a time to mourn. Grief can come and go for years.
Where can I get help with grief?
Leaning on God and on other people both matter. A pastor, a grief support group, or a doctor can help, especially if grief is making it hard to sleep, eat or get through the day.
