New Year Bible verses

The best-known New Year verses are Isaiah 43:19 ("Behold, I will do a new thing"), Lamentations 3:22-23 (God's compassions "are new every morning"), 2 Corinthians 5:17, and Philippians 3:13-14 ("forgetting those things which are behind"). For a New Year blessing, many use Numbers 6:24-26.

The Bible has no New Year's Day as we keep it, but it has a lot to say about beginnings, about leaving the past behind, and about planning with humility. It also says God's mercies are new every morning, which means a fresh start does not have to wait for January.

The verses below are grouped by how people use them at the turn of the year: a fresh start, making plans and resolutions, keeping them once the excitement fades, and a blessing for the year ahead. Every verse is the King James Version text.

Common questions

What is a good Bible verse for the New Year?

Isaiah 43:19, "Behold, I will do a new thing," and Lamentations 3:22-23 are the most used. For a blessing on a card, Numbers 6:24-26 is a classic.

Does the Bible mention New Year's Day?

Not as we keep it. In Exodus 12:2 God tells Israel that the month of the Passover "shall be the first month of the year to you," so Israel's calendar year began in the spring.

Is it biblical to make New Year's resolutions?

The Bible does not mention resolutions, but it encourages planning, like the builder who counts the cost (Luke 14:28), and it warns against assuming tomorrow: "If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that" (James 4:15).

What does the Bible say about starting over?

Lamentations 3:22-23 says God's compassions "are new every morning," and Proverbs 24:16 says "a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again." A fresh start is offered every day, not only on January 1.
